June 25, 1938
Her neighbour’s son T. has the new Joe DiMaggio baseball card. He is proudly showing it to her. The game is on the radio. It’s a sunny day. They both chew a stick of gum.
He is rapidly telling her all the stats, and she is smiling, trying to listen. Then she notices the salary on the card.
$25,000 a year.
She is astonished.
Her job search continues, and although she remains optimistic, she is a touch weary. T’s enthusiasm helps her mood. It is summer after all.
[Side Note: At that game, The Yankees against the Detroit Tigers, the Yankees won. Joe got one hit and one run, and two RBI’s. Still, the best was yet to come. ]
