Elderberries Now Ripe

/ August 30, 1938

Tuesday August 30, 1938
[ Elsewhere, Eric Blair also keeps a diary. ]

Warmer.

Elderberries now ripe & bird-shit everywhere deep purple. Purple stains on logs etc. where they have been. Seems difficult to believe that birds digest much of what they eat.

———————

She makes blackberry jam with berries picked yesterday afternoon. There was only a little bit of purple bird-poop and purple stains. Her fingernails are stained.

[Sidenote: Excerpt from George Orwell diary.
